Webinar: Sanskrit for Astrologers. A two-part Webinar.

- A historical overview of Sanskrit, its importance for Indian culture and relation to other languages worldwide (including English), and the European ‘discovery’ of Sanskrit beginning in the 18th century
- A comprehensive introduction to the speech sounds of Sanskrit and the script systems used to represent them, with a focus on teaching correct pronunciation
- Sanskrit terms for common Jyotiṣa concepts such as planets, signs and houses
- An outline of common meters, with practical demonstrations of traditional styles of recitation/chanting of mantras such as the Navagraha-stotra (hymn to the nine planets or grahas)
- An explanation of how Sanskrit forms compound words, which are frequently challenging to beginning students
After the first webinar, participants are welcome to submit suggestions for vocabulary that they would like to hear pronounced and/or explained, as well as particular stanzas (śloka) that they want to learn to chant.
MARTIN GANSTEN, PhD, is a Sanskritist and historian of religion specializing in both Indic religions and the history of astrology, particularly in South Asia. His study of Sanskrit began more than four decades ago at the age of 13, and for a number of years he taught the language at Lund University and the University of Copenhagen. Based in Sweden, Martin has published Sanskrit-to-Swedish translations of the Bhagavadgītā and early Upaniṣads as well as English translations of Sanskrit astrological texts, most recently the encyclopaedic Hāyanaratna or Jewel of Annual Astrology authored in 1649 by Balabhadra Daivajña, court astrologer to the governor of Bengal (available under .
